SCOTT MCCLOUD: "Tales Of The Closet was a ground-breaking series in its time-and still is now. There should be more comics like this."

KURT BUSIEK: "TOTC is absolutely compelling – heartfelt, engaging and important. Once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down. And once you finish it, you'll join the rest of us and wish there was more."

ALISON BECHDEL: "Ivan Velez Jr. is a master of the comics form. That's all there is to it."

THE ADVOCATE: "Ivan Velez's darkly authentic comic books, with their urban locales and themes of loneliness, violence and depression address teenagers on their own level... infused with all the angst, drama, and confusion of a teen coming to terms with his or her own homosexuality."

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY: "It is a testament to his ability to create interesting characters..."

THE GAY COMICS LIST: "Ivan Velez manages to build very warm and believable characters, full of energy and hopes."

At first I was a bit cynical because of the artstyle but it has grown on me, and now I think it's amazing. The story is really modern yet at the same time is a flash back to the past. I really hope things get better and I hope Imelda is okay!

The story is really good but it kinda makes me sad... I hope it gets happier as it develops.

This is probably the most interesting story i've seen on this website.
The artwork is gritty and dark - just like the circumstances surrounding the characters.
I also like how the artist has really tried to incorporate characters who are from such diverse backgrounds - leading the reader through the pitfalls and negative thought/behaviour that young people who are coming to terms with being gay may sometimes experience.
It could be anything - gender, race, ethnicity or religion - whatever the minority that is ostracized and punished, this story speaks for it.
Definitely a work of psychological art.

Wow! I'm excited that NETCOMICS has introduced a story that's in a totally different genre. I love Manhwa and Manga, but I also love graphic novels--especially indie and alternativey ones--and "Tales of the Closet" has a very alternative feel.

What I really enjoy about the story, though, is that it has a premise and characters that anyone who felt (or presently feels) out of place in high school can relate to--no matter what their sexuality. "Tales of the Closet" really captures many of the aspects of teenage life that alternatively make you wince and crack a smile. I know some people who read comics want entirely to escape into fantasy, which is why science fiction, modern day Cinderella stories, and fantastical epics exist. Yet, there are also a lot of people who would feel happiness and relief in recognizing some real life, and some of themselves, in a comic book--especially for people going through similar things to what Velez's characters are going through. Characters whose experiences help you feel less alone in the world are a big part of what makes "Tales of the Closet" so valueable.

Also, I enjoyed the character interaction and dialogue, and the drawings are very good! The characters look realistic and have dynamic facial expressions. So, two thumbs up :-D Pardon the pun, but I can't wait for the rest to come out!

I'm happy to see something completely new on Netcomics. Being a big fan of graphic novels, I was hoping the publisher would have a richer graphic novel catalog than what they have now. Great Catsby has become one of my all-time favorites. I'd like to see more of this.
